Education, Culture and Sport
Võru is the educational, cultural and sports centre of the county. It was here where one of the most essential texts of Estonian culture and language, the Estonian national epic “Kalevipoeg” was written by the famous municipal medical practitioner and writer Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald in the 19th century. Kreutzwald developed national sciences, the Estonian language and gave us literature in our own language.

People of Võru love songs, dancing and playing musical instruments; they honour national traditions and are proud to share their distinctive peasant culture with others. Thousands of people interested in culture from abroad come to Võru every year to participate in the international folk festival.
Playback show and Youth Fair are held for the young, Summerfest is an annual event and the celebrations of the anniversary of Võru take place in August.
The centre of local cultural events is the newly renovated community centre “Kannel” which offers both the old and the young opportunities to watch theatre performances, listen to concerts and enjoy art exhibitions and different kinds of entertainment.
The most important event for our sports life was the opening of a new sports hall which excels in the quality of its building and sporting opportunities. The major sports events of southern Estonia and also competitions of state and international importance will be held here.
One of the best known events is Võru Roller which is held every summer and is attended by top sportsmen both from Estonia and abroad.

The young people who are interested in sports can practice it in Võru Sports School and various sports clubs that specialize in judo, football, riding, basketball, karate, gymnastics and aerobics.
Exercising in one’s leisure time is made possible by several facilities: tennis courts, the fields where beach volleyball can be played, a basketball court, a skatepark near Lake Tamula and a minifootball field covered with artificial lawn in Olevi Street.
